Karrween Weereeng Marr - Dance of the Spirit People

The Vault Wall City of Portland St Kilda, Melbourne

The Vault is a famous wall in St Kilda that is part of the street art culture that has always existed in the city. I was honoured to be asked to create a mural for the city to showcase how my art form is a part of this ongoing culture.

Artwork's Muse

The artwork presents a visual narrative of the harmonious convergence of the Weereeng Marr (Spirit People), whose ethereal presence dances across the landscape, shaping the very essence of our country and weaving intricate song lines carried by the wind. Forever timeless, the Weereeng Marr observe the world with eternal vigilance.

Meaning Communicated

The interplay of yellow and white triangular motifs symbolizes the intergenerational journey, tracing the footsteps of those who came before us across the vast expanse of country. Meanwhile, the delicate light blue patterns depict the melodic cadence of the song lines, echoing the ancient melodies that continue to resonate through time.

Credited Artists: Tommy Day III & Poulina Romano

Incorporating cream, yellow, and red circles, reminiscent of the sacred Bora (Ceremonial marks), the artwork bears the tangible imprints of the spirit people, offering a tangible link to the primordial essence of our land.

Proudly presented along with the City of Portland Council

The City of Wyndham honoured us by granting access to The Vault a famous street art wall in Melbourne so we could create this mural for the community.
